The Munsters Today
THE MUNSTERS TODAY was the 1988 remake of the 1960's macabre sitcom THE MUNSTERS.

Grandpa had made the family test out his latest invention; his sleeping coffins, and a loose beam in the lab accidentally fell on the dial and set it on "Forever", sending the Munster family into perpetual sleep.

Finally, in the spring of 1988, the machine was disturbed and the family awoke.

When they woke up
Fortunately, no one had decided to see why bills weren't being paid or decided to see why Marilyn and Eddie had stopped going to school, and why Herman had stopped going to work. After the family realised it was now twenty-two years later, things went back to normal; Herman was re-instated at Gateman, Goodbury and Graves Funeral Parlour, and Eddie and Marilyn were re-enrolled in school.
Marilyn somehow got younger in those twenty-two years in the Munsters basement. However, in the Munsters Today unaired pilot Mary-Ellen Dunbar's Marilyn was older and more like Beverley Owen and Pat Priest from the origonal show. When they started taping new episodes to be aired, Hilary Van Dyke was assigned to make the MUNSTER'S TODAY Marilyn younger and cooler.

Other facts
Props from the original series were used on MUNSTERS TODAY, such as the clock and the organ, but the set itself was different and rather deformed compared to the origonal show to accomodate a live studio audience.

Spot's tail was the only thing seen of Spot on THE MUNSTERS TODAY, although he still hung out under the stairs. The Raven was the only other pet that remained on the show. Grandpa's companion instead of Igor the bat was now Leonard the skeleton who he met while at college (see episode "Never Say Die").

When the second season rolled around, the show changed somewhat into the 3rd episode. The frozen-in-time concept was dropped and stripped from the theme song, now an instrumental. Eddie was now a 9th grader (yes, he'd skipped four grades) and refused to wear his lovely purple-suit sewed by hand by his Grandmother (see episode "Raging Hormones").

No episodes of THE MUNSTERS TODAY showed on camera any of the bedrooms or upstairs. In three seasons there were 72 episodes, which is only two more than the original series had. Only a few of the episodes were remakes from the original series, updated to modern day.

Many people think the show is a poor representation of the Munsters. Some people do though, like me, favour the show, and in particular favour Lee Meriwether and Howard Morton's interperatations of Lily and Grandpa.

One has to wonder though, why the Munsters don't seem to remember waking up seven years earlier at Halloween to stop the diabolical Dr. Diablo and his wax museum of terror from stealing jewels from a pharoah? (FILM; THE MUNSTERS REVENGE) Hmmmm . . . Interesting eh?

The MUNSTERS TODAY ran from 1988 - 1991. The last episode to be taped was "Family Night".
